Unique Challenges Generate Creative Ideas
Safety is at the forefront when designing schools, especially when a public facility is attached to a school. In this case, having the public library also serve as the Kohler School District’s library was a unique challenge to keep access points to the school secured at all times. Our team rose to the challenge and designed an accessible, stunning library that provides reading spaces with secure entry and exit points to the school.
Renovations at the PreK-12 grade school included technical education and engineering labs, photography / video studio, robotics, fabrication lab, middle school science, and elementary STEAM lab, all anchored by a new STEAM commons. The STEAM commons is a flexible environment for all faculty to use, as well as providing an engaging environment for the after-school program. The elementary STEAM lab flows into the commons where younger students can see the more complex work of the older middle and high school students.
The building addition for the new school/public library also has three new classrooms, community meeting space, flexible study areas, and two courtyard reading gardens that bring in natural light to many spaces.
Outdoor Athletic Enhancements
Ebben Field
The Ebben Field sports complex received an entire makeover consisting of:
- 750 seat bleachers for the football stadium
- sound system for the football stadium
- partial turf varsity baseball field with seating
- four tennis courts
- fan plaza with ticketing, concessions, restrooms, and team facilities
- two parking lots, providing about 250 spots
Community Pool Shared with the District
Adjacent to the school is the Village’s swimming pools that are shared with community members and the school district. Our team renovated both the indoor and outdoor pools to provide a state-of-the art natatorium with an outdoor splash pad, too. Learn more about the Village of Kohler’s pool project.
