Unique Challenges Generate Creative Ideas
Safety is at the forefront when designing schools, especially when a public facility is attached to a school. In this case, having the public library that also serves as the Kohler School District’s library was a unique challenge to keep access points to the school secured at all times. Our team rose to the challenge and designed an accessible (both to the public and the school), stunning library that provides reading spaces with secure entry and exit points to the school.
Renovations include space for technical education and engineering labs, a photography / video studio, robotics, fabrication lab, middle school science, and an elementary STEAM lab, all anchored by a new STEAM commons. The STEAM commons is a flexible environment for all faculty to use, as well as providing an engaging environment for the after-school program. The elementary STEAM lab flows into the commons where younger students can see the more complex work of the older middle and high school students.
The two-story addition will house three new classrooms, community meeting space, flexible study areas, and two courtyard reading gardens.
