University of Wisconsin-Madison
Southeast Recreation Facility (SERF)
Madison, Wisconsin
The SERF project included a three-story addition to the original, 1983 building. Fit into a restrictive, urban site, the addition included two gymnasiums, an expanded cardio center, and a new fitness studio. Also included in the expansion was air conditioning to the existing administrative area, racquetball courts, weight room, and fitness training room.
The two new, two-station gymnasiums each have two regulation basketball courts and volleyball courts. The cardio center is a fitness room providing a total of 75 exercise machines. The room has five plasma televisions – each tuned in on radio headphones. The fitness studio is complete with its own sound system, maple floor, and air conditioning.
Integral to the design were sustainable/green features including natural “cool” daylighting, overhangs, light shelves, low-transmittance glazing, and compact-fluorescent lighting with light sensors. These features save energy while enhancing the human performance and well-being of the users.
