Glacial Drumlin School
Monona Grove School District

This new middle school is the culmination of years of study, planning and analyzing different grade configurations for this two-community school district.  The building houses Cottage Grove’s 5th and 6th grade students and all of the district’s 7th and 8th grade students.

The plan is organized along a central east/west main “Street”. At each end of the street are two story houses, one comprised of four teams of 5th and 6th graders and on the other end four teams of 7th and 8th graders. Encore areas (Music, Tech Ed, Art and Foreign Language) are located between the houses and across the street. The IMC, cafeteria and gym are at the center of the plan.

Ninety eight percent of the spaces in the building have natural daylight available. The school draws its heating and cooling from a ground source geothermal HVAC system. Alliant Energy, the local utility provider, analyzed the first year actual performance of the building. Their study indicates that the energy conservation measures designed into the building saved, and will continue to save, the school district approximately $100,000 per year in natural gas and electric utility costs.
