Lincoln Performing
Arts Center Restoration
Manitowoc, Wisconsin
Bray Architects was commissioned to design the restoration of this historic, 1922 venue. In 1955, the vaulted ceiling was covered with a flat plaster ceiling. The proscenium opening design and the 8’ high by 35’ wide Merlin Pollock mural "Union of Hearts & Hands," were removed and destroyed. The brick walls were painted and windows removed.
The restoration returned the space to its original intimacy and beauty, while incorporating contemporary theatrical lighting, rigging, sound and mechanical systems. The original proscenium was restored through the use of plaster molds created from original drawings and photos. The final treatments and furnishings replicated the original finishes, including stencils and trompe l’oieil detailing accented by the sparkle of gold leaf. Integral to the success of the restoration were the replication of period chandeliers, seating, and paisley carpeting.
